Cement workers arrive at wage pact 

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA  
New Delhi, Aug 14: The Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA) and Cement Workers Trade Unions on Monday reached a wage agreement under which 1.25 lakh employees will get an increase of about Rs 1,000 over four years.

In the first year, the basic wage will go up by Rs 50, the conveyance allowance by Rs 100, education allowance by Rs 190, leave travel allowance by Rs 135 and a new periodical allowance of Rs 25, totalling Rs 500.

The benefit in the second year would be up by another Rs 200, in the third year by Rs 100 and the last year by another Rs 200. The annual increment would also stand revised from April 1, 2001.

The agreement, valid for four years, was signed in the conciliatory proceedings between the two sides in the presence of joint chief labour commissioner SK Mukhopadhyay.

N Nanjapan, general secretary of Indian National Cement Workers Federation affiliated to INTUC, said the agreement would benefit those employed in about 115 cement units all over the country.

The agreement was signed on behalf of CMA by N Srinivasan, NM Jain and R Parthasarathy, and on behalf of workers by HN Trivedi and Nanjappan (INCWF), Keshava Bhai J Thakkar, ABCM Sangh (BMS), V Tyagi (HMS), HN Narendra Prasad, AICWF (AITUC} and Kanai Banerjee (CITU).
