Direct tax mop-up zooms 143% in July

New Delhi Aug 14: Revenue collection from central excise and customs continued to remain tardy even in July, with the realisation going up by 8.74 in case of excise and 9.39 per cent towards customs, over the collection during the corresponding month last year.

This, however, is in sharp contrast to realisation from direct taxes, which remained buoyant even in the fourth month of the current financial year.

Revenue realisation from direct taxes during July jumped up by 143.17 per cent over the collection during the corresponding month last year. Total collection, both from the direct and indirect taxes, during July worked out to be Rs 11,577.93 crore, up from Rs 9,481.21 crore during the corresponding month last year, registering an increase of 22.11 per cent. On a cumulative basis, tax collection during April-July 2000 worked out to be Rs 49,169.88 crore, as compared to Rs 39,814.51 crore during the corresponding period last fiscal, registering an increase of 23.50 per cent.

The main problem during the current financial year, however, has been indirect taxes. Total collection of indirect taxes during July 2000 was Rs 9,423.01 crore as compared to Rs 8,595.04 crore during the corresponding month last year, representing an increase of 9.63 per cent. Total collection of indirect taxes up to July 2000 was Rs 36,302.91 crore as compared to Rs 32,503.53 crore during the corresponding period last year, representing an increase of 11.69 per cent.

The collection of excise duties during the month of July 2000 was Rs 5,086.94 crore, as compared to Rs 4677.95 crore collected during July 1999. The excise collection during July 2000 was up by 8.74 per cent. Collection of customs during July 2000 was Rs 4,095.03 crore, as compared to Rs 3,743.56 crore in the corresponding month last year, registering an increase of 9.39 per cent.

The collection of excise up to July 2000 was Rs 19,437.37 crore, as compared to Rs 17,341.08 crore in the corresponding period last year, representing an increase of 12.09 per cent. Collection of customs during April-July 2000 was Rs 15,754.38 crore, as compared to Rs 14,232.25 crore during the corresponding period in 1999, representing an increase of 10.69 per cent.

As far as direct taxes were concerned, realisation during July 2000 was Rs 1,644.76 crore as against Rs 1,121.42 crore during the corresponding month last year, showing an increase of 143.17 per cent. Total collection of direct taxes up to July 2000 was Rs 12,866.97 crore as compared to Rs 7,310.98 crore during the corresponding period last year, representing an increase of 76 per cent.

The collection of income tax during July 2000 was Rs 1,644.76 crore as compared to Rs 1,121.42 crore in the corresponding month last year, registering an increase of 46.67 per cent. Collection of corporation tax during the month worked out to be Rs 490.57 crore as compared to a outflow of Rs 250.48 crore in the corresponding month in 1999.

Total collection of income tax up to July 2000 was Rs 7,595.53 crore as compared to Rs 5,133.28 crore during the corresponding period last year, showing an increase of 47.67 per cent. Collection of corporation tax up to July 2000 was Rs 5,176.96 crore as compared to Rs 2,420.16 crore during the corresponding period last year, representing an increase of 113.91 per cent.
