Calcutta: RPG Cellular Services Ltd, the Chennai-based cellular telephone company of the RP Goenka group, has claimed to have emerged as one of the first private sector cellular operators to achieve a net profit position since June this year.RPG Cellular has just completed trebling of its network capacity to 75,000 subscribers and has achieved more than 73 per cent growth in its net subscribers base during January to July this year when the Chennai market grew by 42 per cent, an RPG release said.
According to sources close to RPG, the net profit has been achieved nine months ahead of its business plan. The group has its presence in all the convergence sectors - telecom, information technology and media/entertainment. RPG Cellular, which claims 57 per cent share of the total Chennai cellular market and around 70 per cent of high-end corporate market, attributed the company's performance to its high networking quality, world class customer service and innovating marketing. The company's pre-paid services marketed under the brand "Wings" has already achieved 65 per cent of the pre-paid cellular segment.
The group has recently acquired Sprint's equity in Sprint-RPG, which is into corporate messaging. The group is, however, negotiating the sale of its cellular licence for MP, partly because MP is not geographically contiguous with its metro cellular licence in Chennai. It is exploring the possibility of acquiring licence which are synergistic with the Chennai licence.
