Industrial growth slips to 5.4 per cent in Q1

Ravi Kapoor
New Delhi, Aug 11: After an impressive performance in 1999-2000, industrial growth slowed down in the first quarter of the current fiscal. The index of industrial production (IIP) grew by 5.4 per cent, as compared to 5.7 per cent in April-June 1999.

As per the quick estimates of the IIP released here on Friday, the industry grew by 4.9 per cent in June, against 5 per cent in June 1999.

Manufacturing, which has a weightage of about 80 per cent in the IIP, registered a 5.1 per cent growth, against 5.8 per cent in June 1999. During the first quarter, manufacturing grew by 5.5 per cent, against 6.7 per cent in the corresponding period in the last fiscal.

Electricity and mining, with 10 per cent weightage each in the IIP, improved, registering 4.7 and 3.8 per cent, respectively, in June, against 4.1 and -1.7 per cent in June 1999. The performance of the two sectors also improved in the first quarter. Electricity grew by 4.9 per cent, against Q1 of 1999. Mining grew by 4 per cent, against the negative growth of 1.1 per cent in Q1 of 1999.

As per the use-based classification, consumer goods registered an impressive 9.1 per cent in June, against 0.4 per cent in June 1999. In the first quarter, the sector grew by 8.5 per cent, against 2.1 per cent in April-June 1999. However, there were remarkable intra-sector variations. Consumer durables performed fabulously, with 27.1 per cent in June and 23.9 per cent in the first quarter.

Non-durables, though they came out of the red, registerd a modest growth of 3.6 per cent in June and 4.1 per cent in the first quarter, the corresponding figures in the last fiscal being -2.3 and -0.6 per cent, respectively.

But for the fact that durables have a weightage of just 5 per cent and non-durables of 23 per cent of the IIP, the consumer sector would have shown an even more impressive growth.

Captial goods continued to perform badly, showing negative growth in June and nil in the first quarter. The corresponding figures in the last fiscal were 9.2 and 10.6 per cent, respectively. Basic goods, with a weigtage of 35 per cent in the IIP, slowed down a bit, from 4.7 per cent in June 1999 to 4.6 per cent in June this year. In the first quarter, the rate was 5.5 per cent, against 3.3 per cent in Q1 in 1999.

Intermediate goods, with 26 per cent weightage, also slowed down in the first quarter, registering 4 per cent growth rate, against 10.5 per cent in Q1 in 1999. In June, growth was 3.9 per cent, as compared to 8 per cent in June 1999.

As per sector-wise classification, metal products and parts (except machinery and equipment) grew by 30 per cent in June and 29.6 per cent in the first quarter. Machinery and equipment, other than transport equipment, registered a growth of 12.4 per cent in June and 11.5 per cent in Q1. Food products also did well in Q1 with 10 per cent growth.

Paper and paper produts, printing, publishing and allied industries registered a nagative growth of 9 per cent in the first quarter. Transport equipment and parts also showed negative growth.
