Drama over PIB note on action against Microsoft

Veeshal Bakshi
New Delhi, Aug 11: There was high drama in the government on Friday over a preliminary investigation conducted by director general (investigation and registration) of the Monopolies & Restrictive Trade Practices Commission against Microsoft.

The Press Information Bureau of the government issued a press release at 12.15 pm on Friday claiming that the DG (I&R) had recommended action by MRTPC against the software giant for monopolistic and restrict trade practices but abruptly withdrew it around 8.00 pm.

Microsoft, on its part, issued a press release at 5 pm, stating it had met the DG (I&R) who, while confirming that he had submitted a report to the commission, said he had not made any recommendation for initiating any inquiry against Microsoft India. Microsoft stated that the DG (I&R) confirmed that the press release issued by the Press Information Bureau of the government that he had recommended action against the company was "false and factually incorrect".

Microsoft said its representatives and lawyers met the DG (I&R) on Friday who gave them permission to quote him on the issue.
