I-T mop-up likely to be Rs 72,000 cr this fiscal

New Delhi, August 1 Income tax collection in the country is expected to increase to about Rs 72,000 crore in the current financial year from Rs 55,000 crore last year, chief commissioner of income tax Raj Narain said on Tuesday. "Tax collection has grown at an even faster pace to Rs 55,000 crore last year. This year, the collection is to increase by about 30 per cent to approximately Rs 72,000 crore," Narain said after inaugurating a bank branch for payment of income tax, corporation tax and other direct taxes in the Capital. He said a total of 2,089 additional bank branches have become operational for payment of income tax, corporation tax and other direct taxes in Delhi and 133 cities across the country, an income tax department release said here. "Delhi has added 257 bank branches for the purpose to the existing branches which receive tax payments," Narain said.
