Government clears FDI worth Rs 1,544 cr
The Government on Wednesday approved the Rs 880-crore American depository receipt issue of BPL Cellular Holdings, amongst the 34 cases of foreign direct investment amounting to Rs 1,544 crore. The proposals cleared, cover various sectors such as health and beauty care, automotive accessories, film software and electronic media, entertainment software, mining, mobile services and manufacture of refrigerators, compressors and washing machines and NBFC activities.Microsoft anti-trust case
Microsoft Corporation on Wednesday filed a brief with the US Supreme Court, in which it said the appeal of its antitrust case should be remanded to the Court of Appeals, rather than being heard directly by the Supreme Court.
Maharashtra to compensate SEBs
The Maharashtra government has decided to compensate power subsidies given by the loss-making state electricity board through budgetary allocation. Chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said that the budgetary allocation to make up for subsidies cannot be avoided since the government has already set up the state electricity regulatory commission.
Asian Paints shuts down UP plant
Asian Paints has shut down operations at its Kasna plant in UP with following a strike by local workmen. The company has also declared its intention to declare lock-out at the plant from August 7. "The company is confident of meeting the demand via additional production at its other plants in Mumbai, Ankleshwar and Patancheru," Asian Paints said in a communique to the BSE.
Wockhardt's anti-cancer drug
Wockhardt has completed clinical trial runs for its anti-cancer drug `erthropoetin,' expected to be launched in the Indian market by the year end. The company is also working on a biotechnology-based oncology product.
Aptech GDS pricing
The board of directors of Aptech Ltd has decided to issue 12,020,906 global depository shares, including a green-shoe option, at $7.175 each, aggregating to $86.25 million. The move was in accordance with the approval obtained from the shareholders of the company, Aptech said in a notice to stock exchanges. The board took the decision at its meeting held at San Francisco on July 25.
Sensex down 145 points
The market is back to square one, thanks to an all round sell-off. It wiped out the gains that the market registered on Tuesday, after Monday's panic selling. At the final count, the Sensex was down 145 points to 4191.
IDBI Q1 net dips 23%
The Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI) has reported a 23 per cent fall in its net profit at Rs 223.60 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2000, as against Rs 291.20 crore in the corresponding period the previous year. Income from operations increased by 6.76 per cent to Rs 1,986.50 crore while other income declined sharply by 72.87 per cent to Rs 27.50 crore in the reporting quarter as compared to the same period in 1999-2000.
