Gifting children a better tomorrow

HUMA SIDDIQUI
Under its `Give a child a chance' programme, Tupperware India Pvt Ltd, recently donated Rs 5.5 lakh to Concern India Foundation, an NGO involved in the Kala Kutir project.

Kala Kutir is one of the projects of Concern India Foundation supported by Tupperware for the welfare of the ragpickers in Delhi. These children are a source of income for their families and are forbidden from quitting their jobs by their own parents. The school understands the hurdles and the compulsions of these children and therefore allows them to continue ragpicking while they are attending school, says Pradeep Mathur, managing director, Tupperware India Pvt Ltd. At school, however, they not only teach them to read and write but also give them the expertise in a skill that they can use to earn money, he explains.

Hence the school is not looked upon as a waste of time by these families but as a source of a better job option to these children, who would otherwise be subject to unhygienic conditions and illness throughout their lives.

According to Mathur, ``Tupperware has always believed in contributing to the society in one way or the other. Through the direct selling route, it has brought about a significant change in the lives of thousands of women by giving them economic strength and a feeling of self-worth. This event is in line with the company's policy to adopt the cause of children on a worldwide basis. And it is an occasion to recognise the efforts of children and the school at breaking the social barriers for a better and fresher beginning," says Mathur.
