Riding on a television boom unfolding in Kerala, some of the leading personalities in the tinsel world have lined up for building up infrastructure for film-making. With about three more TV channels (Malayalam TV, IndiaVision and Jeevan TV) set to go on air in a few months, demand for television software is expected to rocket. The film personalities who have already announced their plans to set up state-of-the art facilities include the Malayalam film's super star Suresh Gopi and film maker Suresh Kumar. Thus, the Kinfra Film and Video Park being developed by the State government at an investment of Rs 12.45 crore at Kazhakkoottam near the State capital, is likely to make Kerala one of the best destinations for the entertainment industry. "The film and television industry is now undergoing a revolution in terms of technology. As a film celebrity, I felt it is essential to be part of an initiative intended to promote the industry," points out Gopi, who is developing state-of-the-art shooting floors.
"The objective is not only to cater to the Malayalam film industry but also Tamil, Telugu and Hindi film makers," he added. However, Gopi, who had bagged the national award for the Best Actor in 1998, is yet to decide on the exact nature of his project and quantum of investment. On the other hand, Suresh Kumar (also the husband of former actress Menaka) is investing Rs 1.5 crore for installing a digital recording theatre with post-production facilities for dubbing, recording and re-recording and final mixing works.
As per his plans, the facility is aimed at makers of feature films and serials. Most important of all, the Chennai-based Prasad Colour Productions, one of the biggest such facility in Asia, is investing close to Rs 5.2 crore on a well developed processing lab on an area of three acres. Says Suresh Gopi, the park could be a big destination for film making if the other super stars Mammootty and Mohanlal too join it. KFVP managing director A C Suresh Babu said both of them had been approached for the purpose but are yet to make up their mind.
Network Televisions (NTV), which has been engaged in producing television software for TV channels (Asianet, Surya TV and Dooradarshan) for the last 10 years, is also planning to complete work on a multi-camera video studio at an investment of Rs 4 crore by the end of the next year. According to Elias John, managing director of NTV, at present, none of the TV channels, including Asianet, has a full-fledged air conditioned video studio for editing programmes targeted at wider audience, as in the case of the Star Plus show, being anchored by Amitabh Bachchan.
