India, Russia to set up biotech centre

Moscow, July 6: India and Russia have agreed to set up a joint biotechnology centre in India under their integrated long-term programme (ILTP) in science and technology which is being extended for 10 years.The agreement was reached here on Wednesday at the first meeting of the sub-working group on biotechnology during the Moscow visit of minister for human resources development and science and technology Murli Manohar joshi, the Indian embassy in Moscow said. According to the protocol signed by Vadim T Ivanov of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Manju Sharma, secretary, department of biotechnology, the centre will coordinate all research activities in India, including projects on developing vaccines, diagnostics and transgenics of potato, wheat and barley, which have already been identified for joint collaboration. It was also agreed that in the field of biotechnological sciences, young scientists from Russian institutes will be trained in Indian research institutions under the ILTP fellowship scheme.
