Joseph Vackayil
Chennai, June 27: The Malaysian government has submitted detailed proposals to the Tamil Nadu government for the construction of a 34-km elevated express highway in Chennai and to develop Colachel into a port of international standards. The highway project is estimated to cost Rs 580 crore and the port Rs 2,000 crore, according to an official press release here on Tuesday.

A delegation, headed by Malaysian works minister Datto Samivellu, called on Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi and presented the proposals. They were prepared by the Construction Industry Development Board of Malaysia at a cost of Rs 4 crore.

The elevated expressway project was planned to be implemented in three phases - a 11.50 km stretch from Chennai port to Koyambedu, a 3-km stretch from there to suburban Maduravoyal and the third 19.50-km extension from there to Tambaram, it said.

The Colachel port project, expected to be completed in six years, envisaged developing its facilities to international standards, the release said. uAfter receiving the project proposals, Karunanidhi saw a CD-ROM presentation outlining the details.

Tamil Nadu public works minister Durai Murugan, ports and highways minister Tha Kiruttinan, Malaysian envoy to India, Choo Siewkioh, state chief secretary A P Muthusamy and officials of the board were among those present on the occasion, the release said.
