Vipasha Internet unveils ToonsToday.com

Sudipto DeyÎNew Delhi: Delhi-based start-up Vipasha Internet, which launched ToonsToday.com, a daily cartoon site, plans to offer it in 10 regional languages including Tamil, Telegu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarai, Punjabi, Bengali and Marathi. The portal has developed around 50 cartoon characters, representing a slice of Indian life style, tastes and interests. The cartoon categories include office and work, family and kids, politics, college students and teens, and Indians living abroad.

Talks are on to license content to portals, publishing houses and television channels. The company will soon come out with animation films and get into production of multimedia CDs. Plans are also afoot to enter into merchandising by selling gift items associated with the cartoon characters.

Vipasha Internet managing director Vijay Shankar Sharma told eFe that the company has recently entered into a content sharing tie-up with a portal ThinkIndia.com. Talks for similar arrangement are on with several other portalsincluding Chaitimes.com, Rediff.com and Satyam, Sharma said.

The company would also be looking at developing content to offer broadband services including video-on-demand, he added.

Sharma said the company will soon start cartoon series based on management module. "This will be targeted at overstressed corporate executives," he said. The company will soon come out with a book compilations of the cartoons which appear on the site. Plans are also afoot to come out with special cartoon books every month.

On projected revenue stream, Sharma said 60 per cent would be accounted for through merchandising and animation movie licensing. The rest would come through content licensing.

Sharma said Vipasha would be investing around Rs 2.5 crore in its publishing efforts over the next one year. The company, which is looking for venture fund to finance its expansion plans, plans to spin off ToonToday.com as a separate company, Sharma said.ToonToday.com was started in March this year.

Vipasha is promotingaround 10 websites including one for artistes (Kalasagar.com), search engine (Jhingur.com), insurance site (insuranceOnClick.com) and IndianWare.com.
