Ideal workout zone

VIDYA DESHPANDE
It's the most happening gym in town, what with the Robert Vadras and Nafisa Alis of the world working out there. But celebrities apart, Lite Zone is one of the best equipped gyms in the city. It has state-of-the-art treadmills that cost a whopping Rs 6 lakh each, spin cycles, exercise bikes, the works.Over the last year, Lite Zone has built its membership base to 1,200 and is open only to members of the India Habitat Centre.

But what has made it the most sought after gym in the city? Says fitness centre manager Neelam Dhingra: ``We have a specially trained doctor, fully trained nutritionists and well-trained instructors, who give specialised, personalised attention.''

Dhingra says the gym is very particular about fixing a schedule as per the medical and nutritional fitness of the member. ``The input and output have to be balanced if any weight loss has to happen,'' she says. Dhingra does not believe in dispensing diet pills or using special equipment to burn fat. ``There are no gimmicks here. A proper exercise and diet regimen is our only tool,'' she says. In fact, some members have lost up to 25 kgs using Dhingra's exercise and diet routine.

Says Neelam Sihota, who has been using Lite Zone for the past six months: ``I am a member of two other big clubs in Delhi, but Lite Zone is the best gym I've used. I actually look forward to being here every day.'' Sihota runs a catering business, but despite her hectic schedule, takes two hours off every day to exercise at Lite Zone. ``I am here at least five days a week. Though I was never an exercise person, working out at Lite Zone has really helped me. I don't feel tired and can go on till 2 am without feeling fatigued,'' she says.

The normal routine at Lite Zone is 30-40 minutes of cardio-vascular exercise with the treadmills and exercise bikes, 15-20 minutes of strength training and 5-10 minutes of floor exercises. ``The exercise schedule may be decreased or increased depending on the member's need,'' says Dhingra.

But there is a flip side to the gym being so popular. The more popular equipment cannot be used for more than five minutes at a time. After that, you have to give the next person in the queue his turn. Then there are peak hours, before 10.30 am and after 6 pm, for which you have to pay extra-Rs 30 per day or so. ``Sometimes, there are queues and if you exercise in the peak hours, you have to pay an extra fee. Not everybody is free to use the gym in non-peak hours,'' says a member, who does not wish to be named, but gave up his membership as his work schedule could never match the gym's non-peak hours. Which is one of the reasons that Dhingra says she is trying to peg the number of users at 1,200. ``We have a few memberships open right now, but I will not take more than 1,200 members,'' she says.

Lite Zone also has some new additions like an aerobics class, other than the yoga, taichi, taekwondo and body conditioning classes it runs regularly. ``I am planning to introduce a new kind of exercise class, which will have jazz-ercise, salsa aerobics, power yoga and some other exercises to make it the most exciting exercise class,'' Dhingra promises.

If you can manage to worm your way into an IHC membership, Lite Zone is really the gym to use in Delhi.
