Yojana Bhawan opens doors to private sector

Ravi Kapoor
New Delhi, June 16: Yojana Bhawan, one of the abiding symbols of the socialist era, is adapting itself to the liberalised economy. The Planning Commission intends to involve the private sector in plan formulation. The participation is expected to be akin to the dialogue undertaken by the finance ministry while preparing the Budget.

According to official sources, commission deputy chairman KC Pant has written to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee about the restructuring of the plan panel. In the letter, Pant has suggested the dialogue with representatives of industry, agriculture and services and exports sectors should be institutionalised.

Pant has urged the Prime Minister that the commission should provide a forum for government- industry interface. This, according to Pant, is required to develop a macro-economic framework in the medium- and long-term contexts. Such interaction would properly tap entrepreneurial energies.
