Padmaja Shastri
Chennai, June 16: Swarovski, the leading international manufacturer of full-cut crystals, is on an expansion spree in India. It is not only expanding its existing brands, but is also introducing product groups that were not available in the country earlier. SPA Agencies (India) Pvt Ltd, the sole distributors for Swarovski in India, has recently opened a Swarovski Textile Component shop in Chennai, the first of its kind world-wide.

According to SPA Agencies managing director Amar Agrawal, the company plans to open 12 such shops across the country by end 2000 - two each in Delhi and Mumbai and one each in Calcutta, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ludhiana, Varanasi, Surat and Jaipur. Targeted at fashion designers, trade, garment manufacturers, exporters and boutiques, these shops are also meant to enable the crystal manufacturer to showcase its entire product range, Agrawal said.

The brand has one million products including jewellery stones, transfers, trimmings, hot-fix stones, buttons etc. Each shop will also have an in-house design team to guide customers on product choice and application techniques.

The company is also planning to set up a network of associates who will promote Application Centres across the country. These will assist individual customers on the correct process of crystal application. The company is planning to expand its consumer goods division to Calcutta. t will later open outlets in Pune, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh this year. This division already has 21 outlets across the country.

The company is also planning to launch its other product groups including crystal chandeliers components and decorative crystal enhanced by fiber glass lighting."We will have six fibre glass lighting stores across the country by end 2001," Agrawal said.

The company will be investing around Rs 45 crore towards the expansion by end 2001. About 25 per cent of that will come from Swarovski credit lines and the rest from promoters' equity, said Agrawal.
