Technology for fish oil concentrate developed
AGENCIES
The Central Institute Fisheries Technology (CIFT) in Kochi has developed a very simple and inexpensive technology to concentrate fish oils containing large proportions of polyunsaturated fatty acids to convert them into capsule form and market them as nutritional supplements particularly to patients affected by cholesterol and thrombotic problems. The development of this simple technology is considered to be a great achievement as attempts in different parts of the world in this direction had not met with much success so far, according to cift biochemistry and nutrition department head K Devadasan. This was expected to open up a wide market for the currently wasted fish oils thereby giving better returns to the fishermen and bringing in valuable foreign exchange to the country, he told UNI on Wednesday.
