Aircel to expand subscriber base to 2 lakh

Ajit Kumar V
Coimbatore, May 4: Aircel Ltd has lined up ambitious plans to increase it's subscriber base from the present 42,000 to nearly two lakh in Tamil Nadu, other than Chennai, and Pondicherry circle, at the end of the current fiscal. The mobile telephony operator which forced rival BPL Mobile to effect drastic cuts in tariff a year back when the former launched it's services from Coimbatore is banking on convergence of technologies to provide value- added services. Director and chief executive officer Aaad Loois said mobile banking, e-mail services, access to stock market quotations and other mobile Internet services would be available for subscribers.

``Our aim remains to make available the handset to the common man. But the emergence of new technologies should be introduced and provided as value- added services to those who require them. Even as we target the small and tiny businesses, WAP and high speed data services are being thought of,'' Loois said. Aircel was the first cellular operator in the country to introduce a 3-minute pulse. Low tariff helped the company rope in 42,000 subscribers in a year's time, something which BPL failed to achieve in two years.

Aircel launched it's Internet services last week, which will be provided free for the next three months. Voice mail and short message services are being planned for introduction during the fiscal. However, the ambitious target of two lakh subscribers could be achieved only if plans to provide mobile services in around 250 towns more during the year materialises.

Aircel currently operates in 52 towns of Tamil Nadu (except Chennai) and Pondicherry circle. ``The market is expanding fast. During the last one year the two of us got nearly 70,000 subscribers (from around 30,000 subscribers BPL had to nearly a lakh the two operators have today). Our campaigns will be targeted at tea shop owners, auto drivers, cable tv operators etc,'' he added. Aircel, which has already invested around Rs 320 crore, has earmarked another Rs 300 crore for 2000-'01 financial year to be invested in infrastructure as it extends it's reach beyond 52 towns. Meanwhile, pre-paid cards would be introduced during July-September quarter.
