Jamshedpur, April 21: The Tinplate Company of India Ltd (TCIL) has extended its voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) till April 27 for the unwilling 352 employees of its closed hot dip plant (HDP).Of the 1,025 employees at the HDP, around 650 opted for VRS by October 13, 1999, the last official date of acceptance.
"Although we have closed the scheme, as a goodwill gesture, we would grant VRS to those who come forward," TK Ghosh, general manager (works), said on Thursday. He also said that till date around 673 workmen have accepted the scheme.
The company had served retrenchment notices on the 352 workmen who had not accepted VRS by October 13, 1999. According to Ghosh, around 17 of these 352 employees, who have recently applied for the retirement scheme, have been given the golden handshake.
Many of the unwilling employees have already approached the high court challenging the government's permission to close down the HDP.
Senior manager P Sharma said some have challenged the present VRS package being offered and want an upgraded structure, while there are others, mostly below 40 years of age, who want a tax waiver.
