Kerala geek maps software to nail pirates

P Vinod Kumar
Kochi, April 21: It's now the turn of god's own country to make its presencefelt on the global software map. Two US-based technology incubation fundsare close to striking a deal with the Kottayam-based Divine SoftwareDevelopment Centre for the commercial production and marketing of a novelanti-piracy software package developed by the firm. The programme, DivineLogic, conceived and developed by 30-year-old Shaju Chacko claims to havethe might to root out the bane of piracy from the world of software. Varioussoftware developers including global majors like Microsoft are loosing awhopping $20-25 billion annually on account of global piracy.

Presidents of two US-based technology incubation companies, James Saks ofSaks Investment Group and Richard Szymanski of Redox Corporation had visitedChacko's office at Kunnappally village in Kottayam district of Kerala andwitnessed a demonstration of what they described as a worldclass softwareprogramme `Divine Logic 2000'.

Symanski said that talks are on with Divine Software, and Redox was takingactive steps to acquire 100 per cent worldwide marketing rights of thesoftware. "Divine Logic is a marvelous programme and on my return to the USI will organise a demonstration in front of the Software Counsel of Austin,Texas of which I am a member," he said, and added that "it would not takelong before all major software companies including portal developers likeMP3 to join the Divine Logic bandwagon".

If only 10 per cent of all worldwide piracy is stemmed, the potentialrevenue earnings could be staggering, he said. Shaju, who can be contactedat oorja -- 99@yahoo.com and shajichacko@eudoramail.com, said he had alreadygot provisional patent for this novel programme in the US. The divine logicis a foolproof software package that could ensure the prevention of theft ofsoftware completely, he said. The package has two separate programmes, oneto detect and another to destroy the pirated software.

"The programme cannot be read and modified as it is written in an unknownlanguage and will be part of the application, which cannot be detected anddebugged using assembly language," said Chacko.

Despite spending billions of dollars, software developers worldwide couldnot ensure complete security for their products as existing programmes wereprotected by locks or user defined passwords. Hackers easily break theselocks or passwords by reading and modifying the programme written in anylanguage using assembly languages or debuggers, he said. Even the use ofhardware locks to check theft is cumbersome as it requires 1,000 locks toprotect 1,000 different software, he pointed out.

Hardware locks are also not practical to use in portable computers and areexpensive. And to protect an application, hardware locks need a user-definedpassword. All these disadvantages make the solution less attractive, Chackosaid.

Divine Logic, however, does not need a user-defined password to protect thesoftware. The programme can be included in each and every file of theapplication, he said. This will prevent the hackers from breaking into theprogramme as they have to read and modify every file.

As the programme is part of the application it is impossible to remake theentire file. The programme will check for illegal software at regularintervals without affecting the applications in use, he said.

The logic of detecting legal or illegal copies y Divine Logic is totallydifferent from current anti-piracy programmes. The programme contains twospecific packages - Divine Logic and Programme Immune Virus, which togetherwill check the software theft completely.
