Network Solutions picks IBM server over Sun's
Network Solutions Inc. said Thursday it would replace a high-performance server from Sun Microsystems Inc. with a system from International Business Machines Corp. for a number of reasons, including the ability to be upgraded. IBM's RS/6000 S80 server will replace Sun's four processor enterprise 450 server in a move the computer maker considers a major coup against Sun, which refers to itself as "the dot in dot-com."Sun , the leading provider of the heavy-duty computers that run complex Web sites, still provides hundreds of servers on the Network Solutions network, but the IBM S80 server will be positioned at the top of Network Solution's directory server network.
Thai Internet laws seen boosting e-trade
Thailand will take a major step to boost Internet business and facilitate e-commerce with the introduction of key legislation at the end of the year, the head of the government's technology agency said on Friday.
Pairash Thajchayapong, executive director of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) told Reuters two draft bills on e-commerce and digital signatures would be adopted before the end of the year.
"The two bills will be put forward for the consideration of Parliament in June. I expect the enactment by the end of this year, or early next year at the latest," he said in an interview.
NEC to build new chips plants in US
NEC Corp, the world's second-largest chip-maker, said on Friday it will begin constructing within a year buildings to house new chip plants in California and Hiroshima, Japan.NEC will spend $ 300 billion to build new plants - one each in the United States and Japan - to make general-purpose memory chips and valued-added system LSI (large-scale integrated) chips, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun Financial daily reported on Friday.
