Chennai, April 21: Microsoft has entered into a deal with some dealers inChennai who were selling pirated versions to encourage them in the use oflegal software. A release from the company stated that the "Corporation hadtaken to a more amicable recourse after locating the dealers selling piratedproducts". The settlements were conscientiously made rather than resortingto sueing the dealers. The errant dealers in Chennai are Mcfame Computer Private Limited, AccessBusiness Machines Private Limited and Computer Factory India PrivateLimited. As per the agreement Microsoft will donate the computers purchasedby these dealers incorporating pirated software to charitable institutionsthat work to take IT to the underprivileged. Last year Microsoft donatedsuch PCs to an NGO involved in training slum children of Mumbai.
Access Business Machines has signed additional legalisation agreements thatnot only cover its head office in Coimbatore but also its branch office inChennai. These dealers had to give undertakings not to sell unlicensed andillegal Microsoft products in the future. As the evidence is generallysubstantial and clear for Microsoft to sue erring dealers, there isgenerally little option left but embarking in legal proceedings if thedealers were not willing to settle. This has also been done from time totime.
