AVL to set up testing base for engines

Geeta Nair
Pune, April 10: AVL India Pvt Ltd, the subsidiary of AVL List GmbH of Austria, is setting up an automotive testing base for engines in India. The company is expecting growth in the engine development business especially with new emission and efficiency norms in place. The company would be investing between Rs 35 to 50 crore for setting up a testing bed at its Gurgaon facilities over a period of two years. AVL Austria vice-president, business unit, emission test systems, DipLing Heime Denk, said, "We want to be a total solutions provider for engine testing, improvement and testing on inputs and emission tests."

At present, for any engine development or upgradation work, the engines have to be shipped to Austria which involves lot of government clearances and hurdles, AVL India deputy general manager, engine instrumentation, AK Gogia, said. The introduction of the test bed would enable the company to do a lot of development and upgradation work in India itself and reduce development times.

In India, AVL engine engineering division is working with automobile industry at upgrading their engines or designing entirely new engines. AVL is currently manufacturing pollution under check equipment such as smoke meters and gas analysers with complete engine test bed systems.

The AVL team was in Pune to introduce new emission analysis systems. These are high-tech instruments for developing and certifying new engine generations. These would be required when strict enforcement of Europe's new emission norms Euro III and IV in Europe and America's ULEV and S-ULEV will take place. Under the new norms the gaseous exhaust emission values to be monitored on the engine and vehicles have been further reduced.

AVL has redesigned their Raw Combustion Emission Bench (CEB II) and Constant Volume Sampling System (CVS) to meet these requirements.

The company has introduced the newly designed CEB-II priced between Rs 70 lakh to Rs 1 crore and CVS priced at Rs 2 crore in India and is expecting to sell 10 to 15 units each here.
