amusement park industry

Editorial -- Full of promise

The finance ministry seems to have gone all out to encourage the new economy sectors -- entertainment, IT and telecom -- in the current budget. Amusement parks constitute a small but important segment in the entertainment sector. It is a segment which needs concrete policy support, as well as governance to ensure that the growth potential is not frittered away.

For starters, a comprehensive policy on travel and tourism needs to be in place. Piecemeal planning so far has resulted in sectors like aviation and hotels languishing, despite strong potentials. The amusement parks business needs a strong look. It can generate a lot of economic activity in its location area, create a better traffic flow and tourist revenue and even put a remote place on the map, as Disneyland did for Florida.

Hence, government, on a priority basis, needs to provide the requisite infrastructure, rather than just wait to collect the levies. Trees need to be nurtured before they bear fruit.
