TV18 to launch finance news portal, may shed 10% to VCs in Net arm

Priya Srinivasan
MUMBAI, MARCH 30: Television software company TV18 plans to launch a finance and business news portal-Rupeemaker.com-within a month. The company has also put about 10 per cent of it's wholly-owned Internet venture on the block and is currently in dialogue with venture capitalists to finalise a deal, according to Haresh Chawla, CEO of TV 18's Internet company.

TV 18 has already invested about Rs 3 crore in Rupeemaker.com which plans to leverage TV 18's content strengths in the area of business news. TV 18 and CNBC have a joint venture, CNBC India.

Chawla also indicated that TV 18 had several other Internet ventures in the pipeline. "We will focus on providing news on the site and plan on leveraging CNBC's inherent stregnths in this area" explains Chawla. The portal also plans a range of B2C activities which include personal finance services. "We are looking at alliances in this area, possibly with other portals who are already engaged in personal finance and other consumer related services," says Chawla.

The services will span the gamut of both asset and liability management for the consumer according to Chawla.

The portal will have audio and video streaming facilities and plans on providing CNBC on demand. Chawla says that the portal is looking at four clear revenue streams which are advertising, subscription fees (for certain specialised services), commissions on transactions and content licensing.

"We are already seeing some demand from existing financial portals for content" says Chawla. "We are looking largely at playing an advisory role in the finance portal space on the Internet and for this we intend to tap our core strength which is news gathering" he adds.
