MARCH 7: Although the company denies the stock split rumour, the market still believes a stock split would come around the Rs 10,000 level in Satyam Computers. Also there are talks of the company bagging a big order from a overseas company. Even during the two-three trading sessions immidiately following the budget, the stock was strong enough to offset the massive sell-off in the IT stocks as a knee-jerk reaction to the finance minister's proposal to impose a 20 per cent tax on export earnings. Since then, from its sub-Rs 5000 level to its current level of Rs 7150.Infosys
Market players expect the Infosys stock to hit three to four more circuits before normal trading resumes in the counter. Apart from the company's successive announcements of partnerships with companies from differing fields from around the world, a massive 50,000 shares order from the FIIs is still pending completion in the counter. Over the last five sessions on the BSE, the order has been executed only partially, thanks to the market's frenzy in freezing the scrip at the upper circuit immediately after opening of the day's trading. On Tuesday, the scrip closed its BSE trading at the upper circuit level of Rs 12790.
MTNL
There was hectic buying in the MTNL counter today, with the foreign funds buying into the scrip, as rumours swirled that the telecom monolith was tying up with a Singapore-based telecommunications company. The scrip hit the upper circuit today at Rs 346 after opening at Rs 335, while the low for the day was Rs 315, dealers said. Recently, MTNL notified the local stock exchanges that it was planning to list on the New York Stock Exchange.
Brokers, traders and genuine investors are a worried lot today, as they watch the market being moved solely on the movements of five select scrips - which includes market leader Infosys, MTNL, ITC among others. "We are worried," they said, "that the market is totally dependent on these few scrips" adding that the other stocks did not show much movement. According to them, trading has become very stock-specific leading to some amount of instability. They expect dumping in these scrips in the next few days as speculators and institutional investors start to book profits.
