New Delhi, March 7: The Government is contemplating action against United Breweries (UB) group chairman Vijay Mallya for not responding to summons under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act. "Action as provided under the section 56 of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (Fera) is comtemplated for non-compliance of the summons," minister of state for finance Dhananjay Kumar has said. Summons to the UB group chief were given four times in the last five months for alleged violation of Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (Fera) involving crores of Rupees. But Mallya failed to appear or respond to any of the summons, Kumar said in Rajya Sabha last week.ED had summoned Mallya on September 27, 1999, November 8, November 26, 1999 and January 3, 2000.
Mallya has a number of companies under his control which include United Brewerries, McDowells Ltd, and is a leading manufacturer of liquor and beers. Currently, Mallya is fighting a legal battle with Kishore Chhabria over the ownership of Herberstons Ltd as both of them claim to be major shareholders in the company. The mattter is being heard before Bombay high court and also in Company Law Board.
