IARI develops index-based software
Ashok B Sharma
New Delhi, March 7: Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) has developed a software package-TICI-which computes a target-specific numerical index, capable of complete data compression using multispectral remote sensing data received from satellites. The TICI index is sensitive to even small changes in moisture content of soil and can help saving on time, labour and repeated experimental costs for monitoring of soil moisture in arid and semi-arid regions. The technique can also be extended to soil mapping, quantifying depth and turbidity of water bodies and discrimination between types of vegetation at micro-levels.This TICI index is presently being applied in a Indo-Isreali collaborative research and demonstration farm on protected agriculture in the institute's campus. This farms grows floriculture in a protected environment. Copyright © 2000 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
