Petroleum prices may be hiked tomorrow

FEBRUARY 22: The Centre will announce in Parliament an increase in the prices of petroleum products, including kerosene and cooking gas, on February 24, sources said on Tuesday. The decision to hike the prices before the budget was taken after petroleum minister Ram Naik had a meeting on Monday with Prime Minister AB Vajpayee and finance minister Yashwant Sinha.

Naik had said on Sunday that the Centre would increase the prices of kerosene and cooking gas by month-end to contain subsidies that would overshoot the estimates by Rs 5,000 crore on account of rising international oil prices.
