Knitwear workers' strike
FEBRUARY 4: Workers in the knitwear industry in Tirupur and nearby areas began a 24 hour one-day token strike this morning, demanding immediate wage revision. Over one lakh workers in about 3,000 units at Tirupur, Palladam and Avanashi would end their strike tomorrow morning. The joint action council of major trade unions and five management associations had held 10 round of talks for an early wage revision, which was due from Nov last. The talks had failed, following difference over covering piece-rate workers under wage revision and productivity-linked wages. Meanwhile, labour officials have called both parties for another round of talks on feb five, to find an amicable solution to the issue. The council had also threatened to go on indefinite strike from feb 14, if no solution was found by then, Union sources said. Copyright © 2000 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
