MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 4: Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) is setting up a high-speed large asynchronous tranfer mode (ATM) backbone network to boost Internet traffic. The telecom major is also investing around Rs 35-40 crore to set up Internet exchanges to assist other Internet services providers (ISPs) in their distribution.The ATM network and exchanges are expected to boost Internet traffic in India. These Internet exchanges will act as one-point contact for ISPs who can then distribute the stream to their users. According to Amitabh Kumar, director (operations) at VSNL, the company is setting up many such nodes for the Internet. It is also in talks with a few cable companies here to provide connectivity through TV cables.
Kumar said that VSNL is looking at options like multi-media services and cable services to sell its bandwidth. VSNL is deploying the Net exchanges currently across a number of places in India and the project will be completed by a few months. At present, it has alloted around 80 MB of bandwidth to the ISPs.
