Clutch Auto signs pact with 3 US firms to market its goods

Kohinoor Mandal
Calcutta, Feb 1: Clutch Auto Ltd, the largest automotive clutch manufacturer of the country, for the first time has decided to sell its branded products in the American markets despite having commercial agreement with some of the global clutch producers. The vice-chairman and managing director, Vijay Mehta, said the company has already entered into agreement with three American firms. "These three firms are located on the eastern coast, western coast and in the middle. We would be using their expertise to market our products in the Clutch Auto brand name," Mehta said.

The company has also lined up the products. Mehta said that the proposed customers have already used their products and Clutch Auto's items are trusted by them.

The company is the original equipment supplier to all the heavy and medium vehicles of Telco, Mahindra & Mahindra, all light vehicles of Maruti Udyog and also the leading tractor manufacturers like Punjab Tractors, Escorts, Framtrac and Eicher Tractors. Clutch Auto also has an arrangement with the Italian clutch maker Automatic Products Plc for manufacturing clutches for all the new Fiat models, Sienna, Palio and Uno. According to Mehta, the Indian clutch market is worth Rs 400 crore, of which Rs 150 crore is of original equipment makers, another Rs 100 crore for the spares, the unorganised market is of Rs 50 crore and spurious products is about another Rs 100 crore.

In 1998-99 Clutch Auto registered a net sales of Rs 66.62 crore and a net profit of Rs 1.95. Exports during the last three years of the company were around Rs 10 crore. Mehta said the current financial year's turnover would be around Rs 85 crore.

"During the next three years we would be focusing constantly on exports. The Indian market is very small compared to the global market and in the Indian market we have five of the seven major global players but we want to create our own area both in India and in the overseas market," Mehta said. In its strategy for the new millennium, Clutch Auto has targeted a minimum growth of 33 per cent each year and exports growth of 30 per cent.
