Rs 600-crore outlay for soil conservation

FEBRUARY 1: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today approved continuation of the centrally-sponsored scheme for soil conservation in the Ninth Plan with an outlay of Rs 600 crore. Under the scheme, aimed at enhancing productivity of degraded lands in catchment areas of river valley projects and flood prone rivers, a maximum of Rs 6,500 crore per hectare would be provided for category one watershed areas (where 75 per cent of area has less than eight per cent slope) and Rs 10,000 per hectare for category two (more than eight per cent slope), parliamentary affairs minister Pramod Mahajan told reporters in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The scheme would be implemented with 100 per cent central assistance - 50 per cent grant and 50 per cent loan, while in northeastern states and Sikkim the entire amount would be given as grant.
