Dyestuff sector completes 50 years of existence

Vijay Trivedi
MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 1: The Dyestuff Manufacturer`s Association of India (DMAI) has completed 50 years of its existence and has organised a two-day golden jubilee programme in Mumbai to celebrate the occasion. Beginning on Thursday February 4, the function is expected to be graced by Suresh Prabu, minister for chemicals and fertilisers.

During its golden jubilee year, the dyestuff industry is facing the stiff competition from the China, Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and Pakistan. The fortunes of dyestuff industry depends on the textiles and auxiliaries industries.

According to Chemical Export Promotion Council, the per capita consumption of dyestuffs in India is only 50 gms per year, compared to the world average of 400-425 grams.

Said DMAI, president, Ravindra N Shah, "The future of the industry is excellent depending on the timely support of the government. In view of the growing competition from other exporting countries like China, Taiwan, only competitively produced quality products will provide an edge over them. It will therefore, be necessary for the industry to modernise its activities particularly to fill the technology gap in areas like filteration, drying, material handling and pollution control".

The DMAI has been in constant interaction with the ministry of chemicals & petrochemicals for updating of the `Perspective Plan for the Dyestuff Industry 2000-2010'.

"The DMAI has plans to focus on e-commerce and various process of underplanning. This, Shah said, will be implemented soon. According to DMAI, the programme will be kicked off with the inauguration of the exhibition depicting the growth of the industry over the years. This will be followed by a seminar, wherein leading personalities from the industry will speak on various important issues like changes over the past five decades and challenges faced by the industry, research and development and trends in the industry.

The Indian dyestuff industry is growing at around 10 per cent mainly due to the recent rise in exports. The current export figures is around Rs 2,200 crores. The capacity utilisation has increased in recent years. In India, 80 per cent of the dyes manufactured is consumed by the textile industry. But the world consumption pattern is different, internationally printing inks accounts for 40 per cent, plastics 20 per cent, paints 30 per cent, and rest from other segments like textiles.
