NE power ministers' meet from today
JANUARY 31: The power ministers of the north-eastern states are meeting here from Tuesday to discuss, among other matters, adequate security cover for power projects and problems related to distribution and transmission of electricity in the region. The two-day 47th meeting of North-East Regional Electricity Board (NEREB) will be attended by Union minister of state for power Jayawanti Mehta, departmental officials of NE states and officials from central sector power utilities such as NHPC and North-East Power Corporation, official sources said here on Monday. The NE power ministers have already expressed their deep concern over frequent distrubances caused by militants in electricity projects in the region, delaying their commissioning, which resulted in huge cost overrun. The proposed meeting is the continuation of the board's previous meeting at Agartala in August, 1999, where T&D losses and exorbitant electricity wheeling charges imposed by power grid corporation were discussed, the sources said. The power ministers of the region had asked the power grid to charge electricity transmission cost at national rate, saying while the grid charges 12 to 17 paise in all other states, NE states have to pay 32 paise per unit as power wheeling charges.
