Punjab farm outlay increased

JANUARY 31: Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Monday ordered a 91.19 per cent increase in the proposed annual plan outlay for agriculture in the state during 2000-01.

A special Rs 3,344 crore plan to ``regenerate'' the agricultural economy in Punjab has been proposed, including strengthening of integrated cereal development programme, accelerated maize development programme under technology mission on maize, setting up/strengthening of seed-testing labs, sustainable development of sugarcane crop, setting up of bio-control labs, intensive cotton development programmes, project for pulses and oilseeds development, development of horticulture and sericulture and improvement of quality of grapes of perlette variety by introducing improved management techniques.

Laying stress on multi-end package scheme for production of quality raw silk, Badal said his government has decided to establish remote sensing application centre in the state and to introduce new farm machinery like paddy transplanters and wheat straw reapers.
