New Delhi, Jan 25: Punters have turned bullish on consumer electronics sector thanks to a good festive season and imposition of uniform sales tax. The strong growth story and the continued positive performances have made the major players in the sector attractive investment bets.Analysts continued to be bullish on players like BPL and Videocon, as pure value plays given their strong brand equity, product profile and distribution strength. Mirc Electronics continues to enjoy market fancy on account of its sustained revival and the expectations of a bonus. Philips Ltd counter is also expected to do well, given its strong parentage and turnaround and recommend the counter as a good long term pick.
``A good festive season and launch of superior technology products should see substantial jump in bottomlines of TV manufacturers,'' says a Delhi Stock Exchange member. Most companies are expected to register a growth of over 15-18 per cent in their volumes, thus translating to better toplines.
The recent announcement of the Government to impose uniform sales tax at the rate 12 per cent has created a furore in the industry. Videocon will be the biggest beneficiary as it has 10 units across the country. While BPL, Salora and Onida will be affected. Uniform sales tax will squeeze profit margins of TV manufacturers.
According analysts demand for televisions is becoming more and more technology sensitive. ``Technology will be the growth story,'' says an analyst with a Mumbai based leading research outfit. While all TV manufacturers already have a wide range of products in both the colour television and the black and white(B&W) segment, the focus is now on introducing high-end, technology driven products to meet the increasing demand. Last year both Videocon and Onida introduced TVs which allowed the user to access the internet.
The Web cuiser, a product of Onida was an internet TV while TV.com of Videocon was merely a computer with a TV as the monitor. Notwithstanding their high prices both the products managed to generate a huge demand. Onida is also using the current craze for e-mail to launch its Candymail, which will offer e-mailing facility on the 14 inch TV. Thus the focus has shifted to produce more technology driven products. Players like Videocon and Mirc Electronics, which have taken a lead in this respect, are bound to be the key gainers. Moreover the sector is hoping for some excise duty reduction. Presently the excise duty applicable is 16 per cent, manufacturers are hoping it to be brought down to 12 per cent.
Analysts are also hopeful of further growth in the sector. ``In spite of the influx of new products, especially in the middle to the high end segment, B&W TVs will continue to do reasonably well. B&W TVs will continue to generate demand and the segment is not expected to die out,'' feels an analyst with a foreign brokerage house.
