China's zinc exports up 17.8%
JANUARY 24: Zinc exports from Huludao Zinc Co, China's largest zinc producer, rose 17.8 percent year-on-year to 1,26,000 tonnes in 1999, thanks to strong demand on the international market. For the year, the company produced a total of 2,83,566 tonnes of zinc and zinc products last year, up 2.0 per cent from the year before. Rising zinc prices and increased sales overseas boosted the company's foreign exchange earnings by 25.2 per cent on the year to $134 million last year. A larger export tax rebate, which rose to 15 per cent from 11 per cent for zinc ingots effective from July 1 last year, also contributed to the earnings. Last year's output included 1,91,499 tonnes of refined zinc, up 7.0 per cent from 1998 and 73,224 tonnes of electrolytic zinc, up 10.2 per cent.
