Fiat rules out more investment in Rangjangaon

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, Jan 16: Fiat India Automobiles Ltd (FIAL) on Sunday said it had no immediate plan to invest further in its Ranjangaon plant to make it operational, since its Kurla production facility is capable to meet the current demand, a top company official said. "We had stopped further injection of funds in our Ranjangaon (Maharashtra) plant. As circumstances forced us to buy Kurla plant from Ind-Auto there is no logic in having two plants and operating at much lower capacity," FIAL managing director G Ravina said here.

The Kurla plant had a production capacity of 50,000 units every year but the company's current sales were about 21,000 cars annually, he said adding that such a low volume, there was no point of investing further in another plant."We will make the plant operational whenever there is a need but we do not foresee such a situation in the next fiscal," he said.

The company has already invested Rs 180 crore in its Ranjangaon plant and completed construction of buildings. It was about to set upan assembly line and other equipment but postponed the plan after having managerial control of Ind-Auto Ltd last year.
