E-commerce up 27 per cent in Christmas week

New York, Jan 3: The number of visitors to electronic commerce sites jumped 27 percent in the Christmas week compared with the same week last year, according to Media Metrix, which monitors Web traffic and usage.Amazon.com Inc. was the most-visited shopping site for the holiday season from November 22 to December 26.The biggest gainers for Christmas week, ending December 26, were greeting card sites, such as http://www.123greetings.com, which saw its average number of daily unique visitors jump 168 percent to 153,000 visitors. MessageMates.com and BlueMountainArts.com, recently bought by ExciteAtHome Corp., each gained 86 percent and 82 percent, respectively.Other major gainers included Hollywood Online, a web sitede voted to the film industry; magazine subscription site Enews.com, and Claus.com, a site devoted to Christmas.

"We consistently found major gains overall since last year on a week-to-week comparison," said Doug McFarland, senior vice president and general manager of Media Metrix.

Toy and bricks-and-mortar sites were "the biggest successstories," he said.Amazon.com averaged 5,693 daily unique visitors from November 22 to December 26, followed by auction site eBay Inc. with 4,073 average daily visitors, and EToys Inc. with 1,662 average daily visitors.
