Escrow cover for Videocon power project

N Madhavan
Chennai, Dec 23: Videocon Power Ltd's 1,050 mw (2 X 525 mw) project to be established at north Chennai has bagged the escrow cover. A tripartite escrow agreement was signed between the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), Videocon Power Ltd, and Canara Bank here on Thursday.

This power project is one among the independent power project selected under the memorandum of understanding (MoU) route. The capital cost for this power project has already been fixed and the techno economic clearance from the Central Electricity Authority has also been obtained. Financial closure is expected by February 2000 and the construction work is expected to begin by March 2000. The generation of power from the first unit of this project is expected in September 2003 and from the second unit by January 2004. About 7,818 million units of power will be added ever year to the TNEB grid from this project.

Videocon Power is the fourth independent power project with TNEB and the bankers after ST-CMS Power Company, Samalpatti Power Company and Balaji Power Company. However, Videocon Power is the first in India having a generation capacity of more than 1000 mw.

Meanwhile, TNEB in a press release, has assured its consumers that there will be no adverse impact on the computers and embedded systems in all three wings - generation, transmission and distribution due to Y2K problem. TNEB has closely examined and rectified the Y2K problem wherever necessary and has also drawn up contingency plans in the event of an emergency. There will be no disruption in power supply due to Y2K, the release said.
