Roofit Industries branches out into value-added goods

Prashant Mahesh & Pravin Palande
Mumbai, Nov 29: Roofit Industries Ltd (RIL), which manufactures specialised building products has announced plans to diversify into value-added products like water tanks, coloured asbestos sheets and sheets made from composites.

The manufacturing for water tanks is done on a job work basis at the factory of Lalit Polymers a sick company in Pune and the brand is sold under the Roofit name.

Currently, the company manufactures asbestos cement sheets and composite materials at its plants at Ratnagiri, Aurangabad, Chennai and Wada with an installed capacity of 2,40,000 toones per annum. According to Suresh Motwani, Chairman of Roofit Industries, "The rationale for getting into such products stems from a conscious strategy of moving away from commodity products and into more value added products where realisations are better".

Asbestos cement sheets, (AC sheets) a cheaper alternative to concrete roofing are sheets made of cement and asbestos fibres and used for roofing purposes. The advantage of AC sheetsis that it is a low conductor of electricty and is almost sound-proof. Industrial sheds and low-cost housing are the major users of AC sheets. The AC sheet industry was delicensed in the year June 1997. Roofit has a strong distribution network of 500 stockist and 5000 dealers in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, North Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. 35 per cent of Roofit's finished product is sold to industries while the balance 65 per cent is sold to the housing segment.

The major raw material for Roofit is asbestos fibre which accounts for 10 per cent of the manufacturing cost. Asbestos fibre the current price for which is Rs 40,000 per tonne is imported from countries like Zimbabwe, Canada and Brazil.

The total market for AC sheets is 14 lakh tonnes. The period from April to June or the pre-monsoon period is the peak period. For the year ending June 1999 the turnover rose by 70 per cent from Rs.180 crore to Rs.183 crore. Net profit grew by 78 per cent from Rs.11.15 crore to Rs.19.9 crore while the Return onnetworth (RONW) was 40 per cent.. For the first quarter ended Septmeber 1999, Roofits turnover grew by 64 per cent to Rs 60.9 crore, while net profit grew by 100% to Rs 7.22 crore.
