Railways posts 6.9% rise in cargo freight in Apr-Oct

New Delhi, Nov 25: The Indian Railways transported 252.64 million tonne (mt) of cargo during April-October 1999 as against 236.31 mt for the same period last year. This was 6.91 per cent more than the previous year but slightly less than the target of 252.9 mt. Freight earnings rose 9 per cent to Rs 12,367.48 crore from Rs 11,307.57 crore last year.

Of the total freight traffic transported during the seven month period, coal accounted for 117.71 mt as against 114.20 mt last year. This meant an increase of 3.07 per cent. However, it was 1.89 per cent less than the targeted 119.60 mt.

The maximum increase was in movement of cement which rose 23.11 per cent from 19.21 mt last year to 23.65 mt during April-October 1999. Earnings from cement traffic increased 25.47 per cent to touch Rs 1,085.69 crore as against Rs 865.27 crore during the same period last year.
