Colombian transporters' strike wanes
REUTERS
Bogota, Nov 28: A nationwide strike by Colombian truck, bus and taxi drivers to protest fuel price hikes appeared to be floundering just hours after it was launched Thursday, union leaders and police said. The indefinite stoppage, the first transport strike in eight months, had threatened to paralyse passenger transport and snarl road cargo, including key coffee exports. But one transport workers' leader conceded the strikers were deeply divided and the action was failing to take hold. Reuters journalists reported transport was near normal in Bogota while police in southwest Colombia said the strike was having little impact. The last strike by truck drivers in march blocked about 40 per cent of the country's coffee exports in port. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
