Freight rates stay firm

Our Bureau
Mumbai, Nov 28: Freight rates for nine-tonne truck load was rangebound during the previous week though the undercurrent remained strong on hopes of a fresh round of price hikes in diesel and petrol by the government. The rates are likely to stay firm in the coming week too and could flare up if fuel prices are hiked, transporters said.

The rates to most places in north were flat-to-weak due to ample availability of vehicles. The rates to Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, however, remained steady.

The freight to Delhi were stable at Rs 14,000 while Haryana and Punjab weakened marginally by Rs 100-200. Bihar freights were near about steady except for a few places like Patna where the rates fell by Rs 200 at Rs 22,800.

The freight rates to Uttar Pradesh remained same and Lucknow continued to be at Rs 16,000 while Agra hovered around Rs 14,000.

In the western region, the rates reflected same trend of north. Mumbai to Surat truck rates were Rs 4,500 while the rate to Kandla was firm at Rs 6,500. Therates to Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra remained steady. The freight rates to eastern and southern region were rangebound. On the one side, the rates to Guwahati were stable at Rs 37,000 the rates to Dimapur decreased by Rs 500 while those to Tinsukhia were down by Rs 200 to Rs 43,800.

Last week, a rise in the cargo movement to Calcutta spurred the freight rates by Rs 500 to Rs 23,500 though rates to other places (in West Bengal) were more or less steady.

Rates to Orissa were steady with Cuttack and Bhubaneshwar at Rs 15,500 and Rs 16,000, respectively. This is despite the heavy traffic to Orissa carrying relief materials after cyclone hit the state earlier this month. In the south while truck rates to Andhra Pradesh remained same, the rates to Karnataka showed moved in a range of Rs 200-500.

Mumbai to Bangalore rates were down by Rs 1,000 to Rs 11,000. The rates to Bangalore had gone up following shortage of vehicles which was rectified within a week, thereby, pulling down the freight ratesback to previous levels, transporters said. The rates to Mysore, however, rose by Rs 1,500 to Rs 11,500. A slowdown in the cargo movement also pulled down the truck rates to Chennai. Last week, the rates to the capital of Tamil Nadu came down sharply by Rs 3,000 to Rs 14,000. The rates to Cochin, however, increased by Rs 1,000 to Rs 17,000.
