Decline of ground water level in 12 states causes concern

Calcutta ,Nov 28: As many as 249 blocks have been identified as 'over-exploited' and 179 as 'dark' in terms of decline in ground water level in 12 states of the country, the minister of state for water resources, Bijoya Chakrabarty, said here last week. The blocks have been earmarked as high demand areas where over-exploitation of ground water has led to problems of its decline, deterioration in water quality and saline water encroachment in coastal areas, the minister said while inaugurating the three-day rotary peace conference for arsenic-free water.These blocks are spread over Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. 'Ground water in some states like West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab and Karnataka have shown indication of pollution in variable degrees which needs immediate attention of the scientists,'' Chakrabarty said.
