Pepper moves in a tight range

Our Bureau
Kochi, Nov 28: Black pepper prices remained range bound during the week ended on Friday. There was gain Rs 100 in the middle of the week which was lost towards the end of the week. The new crop has started trickling into the market but was short on exportable variety. Most of the pepper which arrived was the taken for oil extraction because of its high oil content.

The exportable variety in the new crop will take another month to arrive, said traders. There was not much overseas demand and the exporters were only covering the orders on hand. The IPC report has predicted India to be short by 22-30 per cent during the 2000 crop. But the shortage would be covered well by a good crop from Indonesia and Brazil. Growers are releasing the existing stock in anticipation of a further crash in prices.
