Check your body composition to know your fitness

HUMA SIDDIQUI
Nowadays, most people are extremely health conscious. But too few know how to go about achieving perfect fitness. According to Dr Prabha Sanghi, managing director of Pulse-Impulse, a Delhi-based fitness centre, ``The true picture of your body fitness can be known through your body composition profile.''

Sanghi explains that weight is not an accurate measure of fitness, rather it is the free fat percentage and free fat mass present in your body that gives you an idea of your body's fitness level. She stresses that all overweight people are not obese, the extra weight could be your bones, especially if you are broad built, or muscles.

``Extra water present in your body also adds to the weight, especially in people suffering from hormonal imbalance, kidney problems, heart problems and liver disorders,'' she points out.

Similarly, all underweights are not unhealthy either. The causes could be genetic, light bones, a high basal metabolic rate (BMR) or less of muscle mass. You cannot do much in such cases. But if the low weight is caused by faulty diet, anaemia or worm-infestation, it can be treated, says Sanghi.

If fat percentage is in a higher or lower range, then help has to be sought. In cases with a high percentage of fat, slimming exercises are recommended, but before you begin exercises at the centre, the personnel jot down your likes and dislikes. Usually, a combination of exercises are recommended, depending upon the body's needs, Sanghi points out.

Checking your body composition profile does not involve a blood test or any other invasive test, just a very simple, safe, quick and accurate non-invasive test, she says. A simple body composition check costs around Rs 350, a more detailed report, around Rs 700. ``We tell the person what exercises to do, plan their diet for them and help them understand their body composition,'' she adds.

According to Dr Sanghi, ``Heath fitness is the preventive side of medicine only. If time and money is spent on fitness, one can save on medical expenses and enjoy amuch better quality of life.'' The Pulse-Impulse fitness centre can be likened to a departmental store that sells health and fitness programmes. You can choose your exercise programme according to your liking, and stick to it under the added advantage of constant medical supervision.

Pulse-lmpulse offers different options for executives, housewives, students and children. Customers vary in age from five to 50 years and more. The centre has a special programme designed for child obesity, with or without other medical complications, all carried out under full medical guidance.According to Sanghi, ``Weight loss can be achieved without any risk with no food supplements, no medication, no heat therapy and no crash dieting.''

She further points out that Pulse-Impulse is the only health fitness/cosmetic beauty centre in the city that is managed by qualifed doctors and can tell you your body composition profile in just 10 seconds.
