Cabinet panel finalises stand for WTO talks

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, Nov 24: The Cabinet Committee on Foreign Trade on Wednesday finalised the strategy for the WTO ministerial meeting and the commerce and industry minister Murasoli Maran said India will be going to Seattle with a mandate to "bargain" to protect the national interests of the country.

The bottomline at Seattle will be to protect India's interests at all costs,'' Maran coming out of the 90-minute Cabinet meting said adding "it will be a give and take approach as it being a 134-nation conference but we will bargain"

Later principal secretary to the Prime Minister Brajesh Mishra said Indian delegation will be going with a strategy to Seattle and Maran "is going there with a brief from the Cabinet."

To a pointed question if the strategy has been finalised at the Cabinet committee meeting, he said "yes, it has been finalised but I can't say what the strategy will be."

He also said the opposition parties would be taken into confidence about India's strategy. The meeting with the opposition parties including Congress for this purpose was likely to be held on Thursday.

Besides the Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Maran, the meeting was attended among others by finance minister Yashwant Sinha, HRD minister, Murli Manohar Joshi, textiles minister Kashiram Rana, IT minister Mahajan and environment minister T R Baalu.

Joshi said "we will promote, protect and preserve national interest at all costs" at Seattle.

Earlier in the day, Maran had meeting with BJP and a few other constituents of NDA to elicit views on WTO issues. During the meeting, Maran said India will not yield on issues of national concern like food security. "National interests will be the touchstone at Seattle," he said after his dialogue with political parties and meeting national advisory committee on international trade in the run up to WTO meeting.
