New Delhi, Nov 24: India will have over half a million internet subscribers by March 2000, according to an IDC India study. This figure is expected to grow to 1.3 million by March 2001.Internet subscribers in India will grow 130 per cent to 5.3 lakh as against 2.3 lakh in March 1999.
The subscriber base is further expected to reach 13 lakh by March 2001, a 145 per cent increase over the previous year.
The high penetration rate of internet-ready PCs in the home segment is leading the internet penetration in the country, the study said.
The internet subscriber base is expected to boom with proliferation of private ISPs. The study said that there remains large untapped potential for internet subscribers. However, the impact of the large number of regional and national ISPs will only be apparent by end of 2001.
