Birla 3M lobbies with Rlys for digital ads on coaches

Suman Layak
Calcutta, Nov 24: Birla 3M Ltd, which manufactures signage materials in India, is lobbying hard with the Indian Railways to allow advertising on the outer walls of railway coaches. It is also talking to Metro Railway in Calcutta and a host of transport agencies all over the country for the same purpose. Metro Railway has recently allowed advertising on the outer walls of its coaches. Around 76 per cent equity of Birla 3M is held by 3M Asia Pacific Pte Ltd and 7 per cent is held by the Birlas.

``We have made presentations to the members of the Railway Board,'' the company's general manager for traffic & personal safety, Amit Loreya, said. The company is promoting its electrostatic printing and digital graphics solutions for various advertisers and owners of unconventional media. The company is also exploring new media in India, like buses, trains, building fronts, lift doors and shopfloors. These have already been done successfully elsewhere.

Loreya said, ``We have to encounter a set mindframe among the Indian policy makers who do not readily accept the idea of advertising on railway coaches and bus exteriors. However, we are doing our best to educate them.''

The company provides guarantees that the use of these products will not harm the coaches in anyway. He said, ``We are looking at replicating our experience of using these media in southeast Asia. As far as the range of media goes, we have no competitors.'' The company showcased its new digital printer Scotchprint 2000 at a seminar here recently. This was the first time this printer and digitally printed signage material were exhibited in India.

The first machine has already been installed at Studio Printart here, which is executing a job for the Panoramic Museum of Kurukshetra. The museum will have a 13,500 square feet of digital graphics, which is being executed by Studio Printart. Apart from the media owners, Birla 3M is also talking to advertising agencies and architects. ``These people are important influencers for us. Buildings that have a glass front will be excellent for using digital graphics for the purpose of advertising.''
